March 2011 Florida Bike Month Events

         

  • Words for Wheels Applications Accepted Through March 2
    Tampa Bay area residents are invited to enter ‘Words for Wheels,’ an essay-based bike giveaway contest sponsored by Tampa BayCycle. To enter, participants should submit a 200-word essay detailing how winning a bike would change their lives. Two winning entries will be selected; the winning authors will each receive a bicycle, light, helmet and lock.
  • Wednesday, March 2
    Bicycle Commuter Skills Course
    11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m.  Preregister Here
    Center for Urban Transportation Research at USF (4202 E. Fowler Ave.)
    The first hour of the course is in the classroom, with 30 minutes on the road. Instructed by Bicycle League Certified Instructor Sharon Monahan, owner of Penn’s Cycling School.
  • Saturday, March 5
    USF’s Amazing Race and Bicycle & Pedestrian Safety Fair
    Bicycle & Pedestrian Fair runs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.   Team check in: 11 a.m.; race orientation and start: noon 
    University of South Florida, Campus Recreation Center
    Go on a bicycle scavenger hunt at USF’s Tampa campus! The race is open to anyone over the age of 18 who would like to join the fun; you do not need to be affiliated with USF to enter and participate. Enjoy information from vendors including WeCar, USF Bike Club, WalkWise Tampa Bay, Wellness, Education and Promotion and more.  An after-race party will feature food, music and prizes.   • Fridays, March 4, 11, 18 and 25
    Ride to Work Fridays
    Join a group ride from outlying areas into downtown Tampa. After the ride, meet up with other bicyclists and enjoy a free cup of coffee at Indigo Coffee in downtown Tampa. Rides depart each Friday:
    7 a.m. – Temple Terrace (BP Station, 56th & Riverhills Dr.)
    7 a.m. – West Tampa Route A (Library, Union St. & Howard Ave.)
    7 a.m. – West Tampa Route B (Office Depot, Dale Mabry & North B. St.)
    7:10 a.m. – Bayshore (End of Bayshore Blvd.)
    7:15 a.m. – Davis Island (7 Eleven, Davis Blvd. & Biscayne Ave.)
    7:20 a.m. – Harbour Island (Café Dufrain, end of Harbor Post Dr.)
    7:20 a.m. – Seminole Heights (Starbucks, Hillsborough Ave. & Central Ave.)
    7:20 a.m. – Channel District (Zelda’s, Channelside Dr. & Kennedy Blvd.)
  •   Seminole Heights Bicycle Movie Night  
      Saturday, March 19 
      6 PM — Potluck dinner, please bring a dish
       7 PM – Bicycle Dreams

    2nd Annual Tampa Twilight Criterium and Festival
    Downtown Tampa
    This family-friendly event will feature both amateur and professional circuit cycling races along with an outdoor wellness festival. Bring and decorate your own bike for the cycling parade and/or touring rides. Take advantage of free activities including a bike safety check, helmet giveaway, street skills courses, bike gear vendors and more.
